Total Energy News | April 2025

Greetings,

Today EAN is releasing our latest research paper: Fossil Fuel Sales in Vermont: What the Latest Data Mean for the State Economy, Vermont Consumers, and GHG Emissions Reduction Commitments. We will be hosting a webinar to share the paper’s findings on Thursday May 8th at noon (register here). You can also read more about the paper in the newsletter below.

We are also starting to plan for the 2025 EAN Annual Network Summit. Please mark your calendar for November 5, 2025 at Bolton Valley Resort! More details will follow.

Finally, it is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Ellie Curtis, who is part of the EAN family as a former summer research intern. Originally from the Mad River Valley, Ellie conducted research on Equitable Access to Electric Vehicles and Incentives at EAN in the summer of 2021, while a student at Dartmouth. Ellie passed away in a ski accident earlier this month. You can read more about Ellie here. We join with many others in expressing gratitude for Ellie’s life and in mourning her passing.

Thank you,

Cara, Jared, and Lena

What the latest fossil fuel sales data tell us about Vermont’s economy and emissions

EAN’s latest report, Fossil Fuel Sales in Vermont: What the Latest Data Mean for the State Economy, Vermont Consumers, and GHG Emissions Reduction Commitments summarizes fossil fuel sales data for 2017 through 2024, and examines what the data mean for Vermonters’ energy costs and the state’s progress toward the emissions reduction requirements established by the 2020 Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA).

Among the key findings of the report:

  • Over $2 billion was spent on fossil fuels in Vermont in 2024 – the third year in a row that statewide fossil fuel costs exceeded $2 billion.
  • Because of Vermont’s exposure to and dependence on price-volatile fossil fuels, Vermont experienced over a $1 billion increase in annual fossil fuel costs – or nearly $1,800 per Vermonter – comparing 2022 to 2020.
  • Based on currently available data, we estimate that 2024 statewide GHG emissions in Vermont were likely between 7.75 – 8.29 MMTCO2e (or 8.02, ± 0.27 MMTCO2e). This translates to falling 18-39% short of Vermont’s first statewide emissions reduction legal obligation under the GWSA.

Profile | 2025 Vermont Climate Action Plan

Vermont’s Global Warming Solutions Act requires that the Climate Council produce an updated Climate Action Plan every four years, with the first update to the 2021 plan due July 1, 2025.

The Climate Council has produced a list of draft priority actions, and the Climate Action Office has coordinated outreach sessions throughout the month of April. There is still an opportunity to provide input. The last in-person input session is tonight, April 30, in Rutland and the last online input session is May 1 from noon-1:30 pm (with one additional option for youth only May 6 from 6-7:30 pm). In addition, you can read submitted comments and submit your own through the Climate Change in Vermont website: https://climatechange.vermont.gov/climate-action-plan-2025-update. Please note that the comment deadline is May 1st.
