Total Energy News | January 2026

Greetings!

EAN is currently recruiting for a full-time Data Manager & Research Analyst (applications requested by February 5th). We are also seeking two Summer Research Interns (applications due March 1). Please share these opportunities with people who might be interested and qualified.

Additionally, we hope you will consider registering for an upcoming webinar February 13th at 2pm on What do we know about heat pump installation and use in Vermont and the region? We’ll hear from Efficiency Vermont, the Public Service Department, and Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP). This is the first of 2 webinars for stakeholders who are interested in heat pump optimization and communication.

We are also currently soliciting feedback on the EAN Annual Progress Report for Vermont as we start to plan for our 2026 report. We welcome your thoughts either by filling in this online survey, or by emailing cara@eanvt.org with your answers to the following questions:

  • What specific pieces (graphs/text/or pages) of the EAN Annual Progress report for Vermont do you find indispensable? Which pieces should be updated and retained in the next report?
  • Are there any pieces of the report that you find are not useful, or are incomplete? Please be specific about both what these are and why you don’t find them useful.
  • What is missing from the report that you would like to see in the next iteration? Do you have data sources you would suggest for this information?
  • How else could we improve this report for next year?
  • Do you have suggestions for how to share the report more broadly?

All the best,

Cara and Jared

Profile | Kevin Chu

New EAN Advisory Board Member

Please join us in welcoming Kevin Chu, who was elected to the EAN Advisory Board in December.

Kevin Chu grew up in Vermont and wants to grow old here too. He is the son of immigrants. A graduate of Middlebury College, he studied the environment and education while also competing in track and field. Prior to joining the Vermont Futures Project, Kevin worked at the University of Vermont, where he led efforts in recruiting for diversity, academic advising, communications, community engagement and economic development, and strategic planning. He is now the Executive Director of the Vermont Futures Project, a nonpartisan organization answering the mission question: “How can we use data to support the evolution of Vermont’s economy towards a thriving future with opportunity for all?” This work has taken Kevin all over the state to develop an Economic Action Plan, helping to put Vermont on a path towards affordability and abundance.

Data Download | Lifetime return on investment from Vermont energy efficiency programs

In all, $964 million in efficiency investments by Efficiency Vermont, Burlington Electric Department, and VGS resulted in total savings of $3.4 billion for Vermonters between 2000–2021. These investments are also estimated to avoid $2.9 billion in societal costs.

The historical gains in electric efficiency have also contributed to a reduction in Vermont’s electricity demand, helping Vermont to avoid costs associated with transmission upgrades while also creating headroom for additional electricity use.

This graph and text come from page 31 of the EAN 2025 Annual Progress Report for Vermont on Energy, Affordability, and Emissions.
