Greetings!

EAN staff have just updated our analysis of fossil fuel price increases in Vermont from March through May, since the start of war in Iran. With gasoline prices almost 50% higher and a normal fuel oil delivery costing more than $200 more than before the war, the impact on Vermonters has already been significant. The 2026 EAN Annual Network Summit will be September 23rd at the Farmhouse at the Essex Resort.

Summit Registration is now open, with early-bird rates available until August 24th.
Proposals are requested by August 19th for short 5-10 minute presentations at the EAN Summit to address the question: “What should the EAN Network know or focus on now to help Vermont and Vermonters cut costs and pollution from continued overreliance on fossil fuels?”
Nominations are requested by August 19th for the Anne & Arthur Berndt Award and the Leigh Seddon Award.

Profile | EAN 2026 Summer Research Interns

Audrey Leida graduated in May 2026 from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies. During her time with the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, she worked to connect constituents with lawmakers, helping translate complex policy into accessible advocacy around pollinator-friendly farming. She also gained legislative experience at the Vermont State House, where she supported Representative Burke’s efforts to advance equity in climate policy, energy systems, and environmental rights.

Riley McCallister is a rising senior at Dartmouth College, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering Sciences modified with Environmental Studies as well as a Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering. From Northern California originally, she enjoys hiking in the beautiful areas around her college in both Vermont and New Hampshire.

She has joined EAN as a 2026 summer intern and is researching Vermont’s Home Weatherization Assistance Trust Fund. She is excited to have the opportunity to contribute to EAN’s impactful work.

EAN has just completed our third analysis of the cost impacts of rising fossil fuel prices since the start of the war in Iran. The key takeaways are:

Price increases for gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil added $124 million in estimated costs in Vermont from March to May (from about $370 million to $494 million).

Gasoline prices were nearly 50% higher at the end of May ($4.47/gal) compared to pre-war prices ($3.00/gal). These price spikes have added more than $75 a month in costs for the average Vermont driver.

Fuel oil prices were $1.11 per gallon higher in May than at the end of February. This means that the cost of a 200 gallon fuel delivery was over $200 higher, from about $800 pre-war to over $1,000 in April and May.
