Total Energy News | October 2024

Greetings,

We hope you are considering joining us for the EAN Post-Election Gathering on December 3rd in Montpelier. This will be a chance to hear from State leaders including State legislative leaders, Treasurer Mike Pieciak, Public Utility Commission Chair Ed McNamara, Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore, and State Director for Senator Welch’s office Rebecca Ellis. We’ll discuss priorities and engage in conversation about new and emerging opportunities and challenges at the federal and state levels. Please consider registering before the early bird deadline on November 11.

We also hope you will join us for our next in person Leveraging Change Speaker Series event in Montpelier on November 13 on Zero-emission heating equipment standards: An emerging strategy to reduce pollution from buildings. Fossil fuel use in buildings—primarily for heating—is the second largest source of Vermont’s climate pollution. Zero-emission heating equipment standards are an emerging regulatory approach to reduce GHG emissions and air pollution from buildings. States across the U.S., from California to Maryland, are exploring emissions-based standards for new equipment as a strategy to help meet state-level climate commitments. Lena Stier, EAN’s Data Manager and Research Analyst, will facilitate a conversation with Emily Levin (NESCAUM) and Nancy Seidman (RAP) about the history of equipment standards, what is happening in other states, and considerations for advancement in Vermont. Learn more and register to attend.

EAN’s 2024 Annual Progress Report for Vermont is out now. Please let Cara know if you did not receive a paper copy and would like us to send you one, or if you would like us to send you multiple copies to share (cara@eanvt.org). Please also let us know if you would like to schedule a presentation about the report findings.

Thank you,

Cara, Jared, and Lena

Data Download | Electrification can reduce costs, but change billing patterns

At the household level, transitioning away from fossil fuels to efficient electric options for space heating, water heating, and transportation can result in significant cost savings each year. Although each home will be different, beneficial electrification has the potential to reduce household energy expenditures by a third, or even more. For example, a single-family household could save more than $2,000 per year in energy costs by switching away from propane heat and a gas powered vehicle to efficient electric alternatives.

However, households must be prepared for changes in billing and payment after electrification. A typical Vermont household might be used to paying for gasoline weekly or biweekly, and for heating fuel (propane or fuel oil) three or four times per winter.  After replacing their gasoline car with an electric car, and their propane or oil heating system with a cold-climate heat pump, all of the household’s energy expenses will now appear on their monthly electric bill. While the electric bill will go up, overall costs across all energy bills will be lower.

Profile | Climate XChange’s New State Climate Policy Dashboard

Climate XChange recently launched a new State Climate Policy Dashboard, which offers an interactive database of state-level climate policy progress across the U.S. The dashboard tracks 62 different climate policies across all 50 states, and provides resources to learn more about each policy. You can also compare policy progress across states with the dashboard’s State Comparison Tool.
