What is Net Zero Montpelier? Net Zero Montpelier (NZM) is about transforming our energy system to ensure our community has a secure, affordable, sustainable and reliable energy future. It’s a bold, audacious, collaborative effort to have Montpelier lead the way as the nation’s first state capital where all of our energy needs — electric, thermal, and transportation — are produced or offset by renewable energy sources.
What does that really mean? A Net Zero Montpelier will use renewables like solar, wind, hydro and biofuels — as well as increased efficiency — to: 1) eliminate the use of fossil fuels (that’s the zero part), and 2) offset the fossil fuels we do use by producing an equivalent amount of surplus renewable energy (that’s the net part).
