Greetings!

It was great to see so many network members and public partners at our 2019 Energy Action Network Summit two weeks ago. We are working on next steps, including to help move forward some of the inspiring pitches that members shared. In the meantime, you can find documents, slides, and video footage from the Summit on our website.

With the arrival of colder weather, and the launch of Button Up Vermont, we are focused on the thermal energy sector this month. This installment of Total Energy News features stories of an announcement from the heating oil industry about emissions, models of how large institutions like universities can lead in energy and emission reductions through their buildings, and a defense of wood heat in the transition to renewable, low-emissions thermal energy solutions.

All of this helps set the stage for an event that EAN will co-host on November 6th with VTDigger about the future of thermal energy in our state – Heating Vermont: Solutions for our Health, Economy, and Climate. The event will be held at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury. See more on this event, as well as our next Leveraging Change Speaker Series, below.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the REV Conference today and tomorrow!

How Penn State is Halving GHG Emissions
In the struggle to address global warming, Penn State University is having remarkable success. It’s growing, with tens of thousands of people, yet its greenhouse emissions have been dropping dramatically.
And those reductions have paid for themselves.
Heating Fuel Pricing
Prices for fossil fuels like propane and fuel oil have historically been the highest and most volatile. Because 78% of VTers were heating their homes with fossil fuels, Vermonters spent nearly an extra $240 million in 2018 on heating fuel than if we were getting 100% of our heat from renewable sources.
