The latest Vermont Clean Energy Industry Report found that Vermont lost 320 clean energy jobs last year, the first decline in recent memory. However, thermal and efficiency jobs remain a significant, strong piece of that economy, which mirrors national trends. According to a
new report
,
the energy efficiency sector employs 2.25 million workers nationally, or twice the number of workers as all fossil fuel sectors combined.
Transportation
The Scott Administration this week unveiled the new grant program for electric vehicle charging stations. This program is part of the Volkswagen Settlement Beneficiary Mitigation Trust, from which Vermont is set to receive nearly $19 million for specific clean transportation projects. Stay tuned for information on an electric school and transit bus pilot program that will be announced later this fall.
Electric
A new Synapse report found that Vermont solar saved almost $20 million for utilities and ratepayers by reducing peak demand this summer. Solar installations helped offset air conditioning usage caused by record high temperatures this summer.
That’s not all – GMP also reported $500,000 in savings from Tesla Powerwalls this summer, an encouraging sign of the multiple benefits of energy storage.

As summer turns into fall, Vermonters start to think about how they’ll stay warm this winter. Renewable heating options are consistently lower cost and more stable and predictable than their fossil fuel counterparts, as demonstrated by this chart of fuel prices from 1998-2018.
